Androgenetic alopecia is the most prevalent form of chronic, progressive hair loss affecting both men and women. Commonly referred to as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern hair loss , this condition develops gradually and follows a predictable pattern. Epidemiological data suggest that nearly half of men experience noticeable hair loss by the age of 50, while approximately 50% of women are affected after 65 years of age. Causes and Pathophysiology: The primary cause of androgenetic alopecia is a genetic predisposition combined with increased sensitivity of hair follicles to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone. In susceptible individuals, DHT alters the normal hair growth cycle by shortening the anagen (growth) phase. As a result, hair follicles progressively miniaturize, producing thinner, shorter, and less pigmented hair.
